Nature Photo Hides Worcestershire - Kingfisher Hide
Nature Photography Hides are a company that specialise in renting spaces in wildlife photography hides to photographers. At their site in Worcestershire they have a kingfisher hide. I spent a day in this hide in April 2013 and again in July 2014 and enjoyed two excellent wildlife photography experiences.
The hide is situated on the banks of a small river on which several kingfishers are active. Nature Photography Hides use live fish as bait for the kingfishers. Some people may be a little uneasy about this, however for those who find no moral objection it does help to ensure that the kingfishers perch right in front of the hide.
When I visited the cost was £150 however you can find out the current prices from the Nature Hides website (see the link on the right hand side of this page). This covered the whole day from 8am through until dusk. The light early in the day is not so good as the sun illuminates the kingfisher from the side however by late morning the sun is behind the hide giving good even lighting on the birds.
On my first visit I took most of my shots with a 420mm lens on my Canon 7D (1.6x crop factor), on my second visit I used a 600mm lens on my Canon 5D MkIII. This was long enough to get some reasonably close up images of the birds. If you have a full frame camera you will want at least a 500mm lens.
There is room in the hide to use a tripod, however there is also a handy ledge that you can rest your camera on instead - take a bean bag.
There are no facilities at the site so you'll need to take something to eat and drink. Depending on the season and the weather you would be well advised to wrap up well too as sitting in a hide for hours on end can get very cold, alternatively in the summer it can get very hot in the hide and you'll need plenty of water.
